5 Immediate Perks Of Traveling With Kids

Lets be realistic for a second, traveling with kids can be a bit daunting. The thought of dealing with one (or more) little people and all of the stuff that goes along with them while outside the comfortable space that is home is enough to strike fear in the hearts of even the boldest of parents. But what people fail to see is how many great things also go along with bringing your kids with you on your travels.

There are plenty of people out there talking about the positive effects of travel on your children and how it will benefit all of you in the long run. I love those things and hope that they are true for my family. But this post is about the more immediate perks that you can see right away when traveling with your kids.

No idea what I'm talking about? Read On.

1. Special Treatment At Security Checkpoints

At some airports there is a special line just for families (usually a much shorter line) and some places its an entirely different area all together with special play pens on each side of the scanners so they can play happily/can't escape while you're pulling apart your stroller, carseats and carry-ons.

2. Breeze Through Customs

Oh man, certain countries (*cough* Morocco *cough*) that really have this whole thing figured out and have a special attendant whose only job is to spot families with babies and bring them to the front of the line. Whoop whoop! Also, this hasn't been studied in depth but it feels to me like you don't get asked nearly as many questions by the customs/passport control people with kids around, its like they know you've got way too much going on to worry about sneaking in and out of countries illegally. This has been true in almost every single country. Win.

3. Pre-Boarding, Seats Together & Cool Stuff On Airplanes

There are so many nice things that happen when you fly with kids! Generally you get to board the airplane right after the people who paid to get on early, typically they will put all of your seats together at no cost (even on the budget airlines), you always get to gate check your stroller & carseat for free and if you're nice to the flight attendants you might just get something fun to play with on the plane and/or extra snacks (I'm looking at you TAP Portugal & Aeroflot - you're awesome).

4. Free Tickets Most Places

Other than flying for free until they are two years old, young kids get in free (or a lot cheaper than adults) at a lot of attractions. Now if only they ate free at restaurants too...

5. Find Cool Things

Because we tend too seek out parks and playground for the girls to climb around on we tend to get to see areas of the city that you probably just wouldn't go without kids. It's a fun way to explore the places that the local families hangout and see a slice of daily life. When I travelled before kids it was a rare occasion that I would just sit, rest, and enjoy where I was. But with kids I have gotten to spend so much more time slowing down and taking in my surroundings while they play.

#6 - BONUS!

This is not the case in every country but some places they love kids sooo much that when you're buying things in shops they'll just start throwing in all sorts of free things "for the babies". Umm.. awesome!! It got to the point in these sorts of places that when I went out shopping I always made sure to have at least one but preferably both girls with me. Don't judge, it was great.
